We Treat Kids and Teens
A significant number of our patients are children and adolescents. So, through the years we have developed successful therapeutic modules to provide relief from behavioral and emotional problems.
Heritage therapists use a wide variety of techniques including games to facilitate the expression of feelings, toys (doll houses, cars, Legos, lincoln logs, etc.), construction and drawing paper with crayons and colored pencils, and anatomically correct dolls when appropriate.
Many of our therapists are specifically trained for counseling kids. Some have worked in acute-care in-patient hospitals, as well as residential treatment facilities and youth shelters.
We have developed a token economy program for families to use at home to encourage kids to behave appropriately. We believe that positive reinforcement and natural consequences lead to healthy behaviors and healthy emotions.
A kid’s problem is a family’s problem. Everyone in the family is affected by a child’s acting-out. So, in most cases, the parents will be invited to be an integral component of the child’s therapy. Our kids are products of our parenting styles. Sometimes, parenting must vary from child to child. HBC helps you to adjust to your child’s needs, which, in turn, will make your life easier too!
Your HBC therapist will work closely with your children’s teachers, school counselors, doctors, and other specialists to assure the continuity of care necessary for the best outcome. Usually, teachers and school counselors are pleased to work with us. Also if your child is ARD-evaluated, and/or is in the 504 program, we will be pleased to provide reports as requested.
Divorce, frequent moves, loss of loved ones or pets, as well as other factors will add to a child’s stress, so we work with you and your kids to ease these difficult transitions.
